The African American Museum is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is the first institution to be built by a major United States city to house and interpret the life and work of African Americans. The location features collections, exhibitions, and educational programs.
Your student group will learn about fascinating individuals and their role in African American culture. The Museum offers a variety of educational activities for groups of all ages. Featured activities include guided tours, film screenings, hands-on arts, craft activities, and traveling trunks. The group tours offered may be docent-led or self-guided tours. The group tours last 45-60 minutes. The students will get an overview of the museum exhibits, which will include their core exhibit, Audacious Freedom: African Americans in Philadelphia 1776-1876. The group will also view temporary exhibits. The Museum contains a variety of collections for the students to explore during the visit. Featured collections include the following: the Jack T. Franklin Collection, and the Civic Center Collection. The artifacts that are preserved document the history and culture of African Americans and people of the African Diaspora. Featured subjects include civil rights organizations and activities, Negro baseball league memorabilia, and the performing and visual arts.
