*If you are staying over 8 days in Italy you are required to register with local police and obtain a permit to stay. You can request an application from one of 14,000 national Italian post offices. The permit kit must then be returned to any of the accepted Post Office locations.
Permit must have 1 completed form, complete photocopy of passport, proof of sufficient funds, photos, copy of insurance policy, onward/return ticket, and a fee.
Stays longer than 90 days (for work or study) require a visa. This must be obtained before travel. Americans who intend to reside in Italy must also go to the local Vital Statistics Bureau, Anagrafe of the Comune, to apply for a certificate of residence (within 20 days of recievining permit to stay. It can take up to two months to receive the certificate.
