Black Heritage Trail

WHERE: 14 Beacon Street, Boston, MA

WHEN: Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

WHAT: Historic sites, guided tours available

The Black Heritage Trail is one of the greatest celebrations of African-American history in our nation today. Although the first African-Americans to arrive in Boston were slaves, by 1790, the entire African-American population in Boston was free. The Black Heritage Trail tells the story of their journey toward decent housing and better education for their children. You’ll see the African Meeting House, which is the oldest standing African-American church in our country. African-American students used to be educated here before laws of integration allowed their attendance at the Phillips School, which you will also see on the tour. Each site on the Black Heritage trail brings deeper meaning to the determined efforts of the African-American community in Boston.
