WHERE: Park and Tremont Streets, Boston, MA WHEN: 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., depending on the season WHAT: Gravesites for famous Revolutionists
The Old Granary Burying Ground was founded in 1660 and is the third oldest in Boston. Approximately five thousand people are buried there, though most headstones contain several bodies. Why? Families could not usually afford more than one headstone per family. All five victims of the Boston massacre are buried in one grave. You’ll also find gravesites for previous MA governors, clergymen, and mayors. Samuel Adams, John Hancock, and Robert Treat Paine all signed the Declaration of Independence and are buried here. And the grounds include other famous revolutionists like the memorable Paul Revere.
