Salem, Massachusetts is famous as the setting for a dramatic time in American history known as the Salem Witch trials. Near the museum dedicated to a better understanding of those trials sits the Charter Street Cemetery, knows as Old Burying Point. There are many important figures buried here, including many judges from the Salem Witch trials. One of these John Hathorne is an ancestor to American novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne. Also buried here is a former Massachusetts governor and a pilgrim from the famous Mayflower. Some of the names on the tombstones here used by Nathaniel Hawthorne as pen names.
