Fort Mackinac

Fort Mackinac is located on a bluff in the southern portion of Mackinac Island. It towers just about 150 feet over the Straits of Mackinac. The fort was originally built and occupied by 18th-century British Redcoats and later became occupied by our 19th-century American soldiers. Fort Mackinac is living history. Like everything on Mackinac Island its like stepping back in time. As you step inside the fort you will hear bugle music, a cannon blast, rifle fire and the tapping of a message using Morse code. You will participate in drills with 19th-century American soldiers, play Victorian children’s games and dance the dance of the times. It’s the 1880s. As if this isn’t enough, the rangers at the fort are happy to provide in-depth educational programs to meet with school curriculum guidelines when necessary. Experience military life during your travels back in time.
