The Strand

Galveston, Texas

The Strand is a wonderfully historic street near the gulf that has specialty shops, intriguing eateries, museums and entertainment for all who visit. The street known as “The Strand” is actually Avenue B, and it runs parallel to Galveston Bay. Visitors can spend hours walking about this historic area. Even though Hurricane Ike has left his mark on the area, the people of Galveston continue to restore their city to its glory.

While strolling along the Strand, duck into any of the historic buildings, saved and restored by the Galveston Historical Society. To complete the Victorian charm of the district, there are streetcars, horse-drawn carriages, and 20th century buildings with a series of unique arches. The Strand Historical District is Galveston’s downtown area and at one time was known as the Wall Street of the Southwest. Since the Port of Galveston is a departure port for cruise lines, the area is often filled with groups getting ready to depart for their sailing. This makes it a melting pot of sorts with people gathering from all over, shopping, eating and drinking. Join in and enjoy!
