The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library opened its doors in August of 1972. The architect who was commissioned to design the project, Ludwig van de Rohe, created a breathtaking building with its construction of matte black steel, brick and bronze-tinted windows. In July of 1971 the Board of Library Trustees named the library in memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and more recently the library was designated a National Historic Site. Located in the lobby of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library is the “King Mural”. Painted by Don Miller, it is a visual documentation of the African American struggle for justice. The mural retraces the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. from the memories of the people who worked closely with him.
