Nauticus

WHERE: One Waterside Drive, Norfolk, Virginia

WHEN: Most days 10:00 a.m. to 5 or 6 p.m.

WHAT: Exhibits on the navy, sea life, and more

Nauticus is a modern museum with an emphasis on the world’s largest navy as well as its amazing history. It uses exhibits as well as Norfolk, Virginia’s natural harbor to inspire and educate you on Norfolk’s extensive maritime world. On the second floor Hampton Roads Naval Museum you’ll learn about the USS Wisconsin, one of the largest and most recently built US navy ships, which you can also tour. You’ll see model ships here, uniforms, weaponry and artifacts from Norfolk’s naval history.

Two exhibits focus on the Jamestown exposition showcasing the rise of the navy after its post civil war decline, including the Great White Fleet sent by President Theodore Roosevelt to reestablish our navy’s strength. In Secrets of the Deep you can learn about and experience the technology and robotics of undersea exploration. There is an actual shark-petting lagoon and other sea exhibits in which you are encouraged to touch and experience the various sea creatures who live there. There is an amazing exhibit of our earth as it appears from 22,000 miles in orbit where you can learn about weather patterns like lightning and tornadoes. All of this, model ships, underwater artifacts, and so much more will keep you fascinated at the sea-inspired museum of Nauticus.
