The Surratt House Museum is named for Mary Surratt. She once made the house her summer home, and she was the first woman executed by the United States when she was found guilty of conspiracy. One of her fellow conspirators was John Wilkes Booth, a name you may remember as the man who assassinated President Abraham Lincoln. The Surratt House has even more 19-Century associated with it. It served as a tavern, a hostelry, a post office, and a polling place – all before the Civil War. And during the War, it was a Confederate safe house. Students will get an amazing glimpse into life before, during, and after the Civil War in this fascinating historical museum.
