Albany Civil Rights Institute and Freedom Singers

The Albany Civil Rights Experience combines a history lesson of the Albany Movement with research materials and tours, plus a performance by the Freedom Singers.

A Song for the Future
Every second Saturday of the month, the Albany Civil Rights Institute Freedom Singers, led by original SNCC Freedom Singer Rutha Harris, engages the visitor through an oral history presentation filled with dynamic testimony of the Albany Movement marches and arrests and majestically narrates the stories with emotionally charged performances of the Freedom Songs. These special songs provided heart, soul and courage to movement participants.

 The Albany Movement
Before the most notable civil rights confrontations graced the cover of Time and the evening news, Albany, Georgia, was one of the first civil rights battlegrounds where four major civil rights organizations joined forces.

The Albany Civil Rights Institute captures stories that emphasize the roles ordinary people can play as effective change agents.  Throughout the museum, visitors will see everyday citizens who changed history with their courage, deeds and strength.  The legacy of those who have passed on and the stories of those who remain are now housed in a state-of-the-art facility where the past is joined with the future through visual, audio, and digital technology for all to see, hear and experience.
