Provincetown Inn
The Provincetown Inn is situated at one of America’s most historic locations. Tucked into a sheltered corner of Provincetown Harbor, the Provincetown Inn is very near the place where the Pilgrims made landfall in November 1620 and came ashore for the first time in quest of their New World English colony. A small ‘First Landing’ park near the entrance to the Inn commemorates this momentous event. In the center of Provincetown, behind a faithfully restored 19th century Town Hall, a massive bas relief commemorates the Mayflower Compact, a covenant signed by all parties aboard the Mayflower to live under the rule of law rather than ecclesiastic law, a radical political concept at the time which became the foundation for the American democracy which would be created 156 years later.
For educational tours, however, there is a more recent history associated with the Provincetown Inn involving whales and a 35-year effort to educate students of all ages on the importance of conserving the largest mammals on earth, the whales that return to the Stellwagen National Marine Sanctuary off Race Point in Provincetown each year from April to October to feed and nurture their newly born calves.
The Coastal Studies Program at the Provincetown Inn is a student tour program coordinated by the hotel in partnership with the Dolphin Fleet Whale Watch. The program’s aim is to have students and teachers alike experience firsthand the fragile interdependency of the land and marine environment here on Cape Cod, and instill in everyone a sense of personal responsibility to protect this marine life and their habitat.
Highlights of the program include an introductory lecture presented by a marine scientist or naturalist from the Dolphin Fleet on the night of arrival, a whale watch the following morning, and for those whose itineraries permit, an afternoon beach walk with a trained naturalist along an Atlantic Ocean beach with 50-foot high dunes. Also included in the program are lodging and several meals depending on the program selected. Programs may be customized to include other attractions such as the Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum and Art’s Dune Tours.
The Provincetown Inn is a full service resort offering guests a private beach and 100 waterfront rooms. It’s the perfect choice for Cape Cod student tours.
