Chinatown is first and foremost a residential and business district largely populated and run by Chinese-Americans. Visitors come from around the country either to reconnect with the Chinese culture in their own history or, for many tourists, to discover it for the first time. And this is a wonderful place to do it. Grocery stores, restaurants, and gift shops all carry the banner for Chinese culture.
“The World Belongs to the Commonwealth,” Chinese symbols proclaim on the colorful Chinatown Gate heralding the neighborhood and celebrating the spirit of the Chinese people. Inside you’ll find Chinatown Square, framed by imposing bronze gates and often graced with cultural performances. Its two-story commercial center is filled with colorful shops and restaurants. There are churches, temples, murals, and a Veterans Memorial – all worthy attractions in this unique Chicago experience.
