Waco Corinth, Mississippi  Educational Tour

Founded in 1854 as the site of the crossing of the Mobile and Ohio and the Memphis and Charleston Railroads, Cross City became a thriving community. In 1856, the town’s name was changed to Corinth. Hotels, businesses and even photography studios sprang up throughout the bustling little town.

In 1862, all eyes turned to Corinth and its railroads. Since these were the only standard-gauge railroads of any length in the South, the North felt it imperative that this crossing be under their control. Railroads were considered to be the “life-line” of the Confederacy, and this one had to be cut.

The first effort to take control of this crossing was the bloody Battle of Shiloh, April 6-7, 1862. By late May 1862, Union troops had laid siege on Corinth. On October 3-4 of that year, the Confederates tried to retake Corinth, but their efforts proved unsuccessful. For the remainder of the war, Corinth continued to be occupied.

During the four years of the war, over 150 generals were headquartered in Corinth. The aggregate number of troops in Corinth was in excess of 300,000, the largest number of troops ever assembled in the Western Hemisphere. This rich history makes Corinth a great choice for educational tours.

History is only part of Corinth’s story. Tree-lined streets welcome you from the bustling downtown, which boasts restaurants, antique shops, an art gallery, boutiques and specialty shops, into the historic residential area where gracious homes mirror the growth of the city from its beginning to present day.

Music and entertainment are another chapter in the town’s story. There may be a live stage play at the Corinth Theatre-Arts Crossroads Playhouse, a performance by the Corinth Symphony Orchestra at the Coliseum Civic Center, Monster Trucks at the Crossroads Arena, or Blue Grass Pickin’ on Court Square – all perfect for performance groups and other student tours.

Festivals, many featuring food, liven-up the calendar. They include the Regional Chili Cook-Off, Fourth of July Festival at Jacinto Courthouse, the Slugburger Festival, Hog Wild Barbecue Cooking Contest, Corinth’s Grand Illumination, the Farmington Heritage Day, and the monthly Green Market at the Depot

There is no shortage of museums in Corinth. The National Park Service has opened a state-of-the-art Civil War Interpretive Center. The Contraband Camp spotlights a portion of history often forgotten—the transition of slaves to freedom. Other museums include the Crossroads Museum at the Corinth Depot, the Coca-Cola Museum, and the Black History Museum.

Several self-guided tours allow you to delve into a particular part of the area. The Architectural Tour guides the visitor through the Historic Downtown and Residential areas. The Corinth Campaign Map traces the Corinth Campaign of 1862 from Shiloh, Iuka, Corinth and Davis Bridge. The Civil War Trails map will take you to the historic Civil War sites and earthworks, which surround the city. Soon the Downtown Artist Trail will guide the visitor to original art made by local craftsmen.

Surrounding Corinth, you will find communities and small towns which have “you-pick-‘em” farms, an equestrian center and petting zoo, a shooting-range, a buffalo ranch with horses and riding trails, and a wildlife refuge. Other outdoor opportunities include Crossroads Regional Park featuring a Play Station, walking trails, tennis courts, and golf courses.

Corinth has something for everyone!
