Jacinto Courthouse, established in 1836, served as the populous county seat of Tishomingo County, often referred to as the “Great State of Tishomingo” because of its large size.  Commissioned in 1852 and completed in 1854, the courthouse emerged as an impressive example of Federal Style architecture. The community was named Jacinto to honor the great soldiers in the battle the previous month, April, for Texas’ independence.

Jacinto was a flourishing town consisting of stores, shops, hotels, taverns, schools, and churches and had dreams of making this settlement the largest city in the South. When Jacinto rejected the coming of the railroads, causing them to move to nearby Corinth, the town’s population began to dwindle. Added to that, the huge Tishomingo County was divided into three smaller counties, people again left for more prosperous towns.

Today there is little left of the bustling town. The courthouse, a general store, and a few homes are left. The park around the courthouse includes a park area, walking rails, and RV hook-ups. This is the site of the second largest political speaking in the state when the Jacinto Foundation hosts its annual Fourth of July Festival.
