Hermitage Slave Quarters
Two buildings located at the Greenfield Village are the Hermitage Slave Quarters. The Quarters housed two families while on the Hermitage Plantation in Chatham County, Georgia. The plantation once had 52 additional quarters that housed 201 African-American slaves on 400 acres. The African-Americans confined here crafted the materials used to build their own homes. This was an industrious plantation. The plantation was equipped with a steam-powered saw, large brick works, and rice barrel factory. The African-Americans who lived and worked at this plantation produced goods for themselves after they had finished the required work. The people not only worked in the fields but they were midwives, carpenters, steam engineers, and brickmakers.
