African-American Museum
Cedar Rapids, Iowa
In 2008 there was a terrible flood throughout the mid-west belt of the United States. Many historic buildings were damaged or destroyed. The African-American Museum was rebuilt after the 2008 flood, adding to the history of the building and the area. The museum houses exhibits, art, and biographies of African-Americans from all around the state and documents their contributions to founding Iowa communities. Prior to the group’s visit, workshops can be arranged that will educate the visitors as to the different cultures that have influenced the area. See the French, African and Haitian influences in the drapos found in the museum. Drapos are prayer flags that depict the different spirits from a combination of many religious expressions. The religion is called Voodu. Other workshops and exhibits are offered to expose the visitor to the works of noted African-Americans, such as George Washington Carver, Rosa Parks, Wilma Rudolph and others
