Theatre Cedar Rapids
Cedar Rapids, Iowa
The original Theatre Cedar Rapids was just one of many historic building damaged by the flood of 2008. The building itself has a lively history of being used to house interesting and entertaining groups of people. In 1925 a local troupe performed Cardboard Moon, a play that has a fantasy vs. reality storyline in a small studio apartment. The audience of thirty loved the performance. While eating cookies and coffee afterwards, the cast wondered why they couldn’t continue to perform on a somewhat regular basis, which they did for the next four years. When a local girl, Catherine Hunt, returned home after attending acting school she approached the owner of the Turner Mortuary building about allowing theater to be performed in the building. In 1929, Community Theater was birthed in Cedar Rapids and today audiences can enjoy performances of Rent, The Producers, Annie, Alter Boyz, and other top-rated plays. Visitors to Theatre Cedar Rapids will enjoy the culture of middle America.
