Amana ColoniesAmana Colonies

A short 18-mile drive from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is the Amana Colonies, a historic German Communal Settlement. The food and atmosphere are amazing, and the people are even more amazing. All who visit can spend the day exploring the seven historic villages that make up the Amana Colonies. There are artisans who preserve their crafts and culture by doing their art in the ways of old. There are those who weave baskets, those who make furniture, clocks, and toys. You’ll also find candle dipping, potters and jewelry makers. Anything you may wish to take home as a gift or to decorate with can be found.

One of the buildings in the Amana Colonies houses the Heritage Society. The Heritage Society will help arrange customized tours for your group that will cater to the varied interests in the group. Groups can choose from tours like the Amana Colonies Barn Tour, AJ’s Copper Garden Art Gallery where metal sculptures will make you smile, Ackerman Winery - the oldest winery owned and operated by one family in the state of Iowa, or Amana Woolen Mill - Iowa’s only operating woolen mill, where you can see wool and cotton blankets being made. Plan to spend the day at Amana Colonies.
