Ingalls Homestead
From our Laura Ingalls Wilder Literature Theme Tour
In 1880 Charles made a homestead claim to this section of DeSmet. Many of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books revolved around this prairie home. Today student travelers can visit Ma’s Little House, a Prairie Exhibit, participate in Pioneering Activities, ride in a covered wagon, and visit ponies & horses. This homestead is a living prairie so groups can not only view….they can participate. At the homestead you can get a bird’s eye view of the Ingalls’ land in 1880 at the Look-Out Tower, pump the working well that Pa dug to locate water, participate in hands-on activities inside Ma’s house, get educated in the Prairie learning center located in the hayloft of the Livestock Barn, attend an 1880’s school session at the Little Prairie School, and much more.
