Sleepy Hollow Cemetery is a beautiful, historical site in Concord filled with memorials to some of Concord’s favorite former residents. Author’s Ridge will be of greatest interest to students on literary tours. Louisa May Alcott is buried here as well as her father and sisters. Alcott died within two days of her father. The gravesites to the other family members list initials only. The humility of each of the famous gravesites is striking. Nathaniel Hawthorne’s only has his last name engraved. Other famous authors buried in Sleepy Hollow include Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson. These famous families gathered on many occasions in life, sharing philosophy and discussing arts and sciences in what led to an intellectual revolution. It seems only fitting that these American legends share a beautiful resting place after death.
