Crazy Horse MemorialCrazy Horse Memorial

Crazy Horse Memorial is the world's largest sculpture-in-progress. Frequent drilling and mountain blasts make each visit unique and a great addition to educational tours. When completed, Crazy Horse Memorial will stand 563 feet tall and 641 feet long. Native American leaders chose Crazy Horse for the mountain carving because he was a great and patriotic hero. Crazy Horse's tenacity of purpose, his modest life, his unfailing courage, and his tragic death set him apart and above the others. Chief Henry Standing Bear and other Native American elders who had invited Korczak Ziolkowski to carve Crazy Horse Memorial insisted that the memorial be located in the Black Hills because they are sacred to the Lakota.

The visitors' complex surrounding the mountain carving provides group tours with a number of experiences, including the 20-minute orientation video presentation, Dynamite & Dreams, the Indian Museum of North America, the Native American Cultural Center, the Sculptor's studio home and workshop, a 40,000 square foot Orientation Center and two theaters. Nightly performances of a multimedia laser-light show spotlight Native American culture using dramatic animations and a stirring musical score. During the summer season, group tours have the opportunity to visit with many Native American artists and crafts people who create their artwork at the Memorial, making Crazy Horse a perfect stop for student travel
