The City of Presidents
Rapid City has a significant number of public sculptures on display within the city. Visitors to historic downtown Rapid City are greeted by the City of Presidents, a series of life-size bronze statues of our nation’s past presidents along the city’s streets and sidewalks. Whether enjoying downtown shopping, dining or other attractions, group tours enjoy experiencing these sculptures.
Educational tours may utilize scavenger hunts as an exciting way to learn our presidential history. The City of Presidents project began to honor the legacy of the American presidency. Each bronze was created by a local sculptor and each depicts the president in a setting for which they were known. For example, the statue of George Washington portrays him as a general in full military dress attire. Before he was known as a politician, and subsequently President of the United States, George Washington was a military commander. At 6’2”, Washington was a tall man for this time in history and his statue, like all the other presidential statues, is shown as life-size. Depicted in a prideful military stature, he is shown at possibly his finest hour. Visitors enjoy encountering the bronzes along Rapid City’s downtown street corners and having their photos taken next to their favorite president.
