Armstrong Browning Library
“How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.”
Located on the beautiful Baylor University campus, the historic and personal artifacts of the great British Victorian poets Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning are displayed beneath 62 stained glass windows depicting the Brownings’ poetry.
The Armstrong Browning Library is a research library devoted to the study of the lives and works of the Brownings. It houses the world's largest collection of books, letters, manuscripts, and memorabilia pertaining to them, as well as a substantial collection of primary and secondary materials related to 19th-century literature and culture. Included in the latter category are works by literary figures who were contemporaries and associates of the Brownings, such as Matthew Arnold, Charles Dickens, George MacDonald, Joseph Milsand, and John Ruskin. Growing collections of 19th-century women poets and 19th-century theological pamphlets are among its newest avenues of expansion.
The building itself is an architectural masterpiece with immensely high ceilings, intricate woodwork, and polished bookcases filled with rare books. It is home to an extensive Wedgwood china collection, extolling works of “the greatest of the world’s potters,” Josiah Wedgwood.
Scholars and student tours are welcome to tour the magnificent building or conduct research using its extensive non-circulating collections. The Armstrong Browning Library staff is happy to provide guided educational tours. Preliminary literature about the Library and the Brownings is available upon request.
