Homestead Heritage
Homestead Heritage traditional crafts village exemplifies the enduring values of handcraftsmanship. Educational tour groups can visit the shops of the crafts village, watch craftsmen work, attend classes to learn craft skills and experience the joy and fulfillment of the art of craft work.
The crafts village includes:
- The historic, two-centuries-old, hand-hewn "Hope Farm" barn filled with hundreds of one-of-a-kind handcrafted items produced in the community. Walk across the well-worn threshing floor and see hand-forged iron beds, smell the fragrances of handmade soaps, look at hand-turned wooden bowls, and appreciate the fine craftsmanship in award-winning pieces of furniture.
- The Homestead Farms Deli & Bakery features daily lunch specials, smoked barbecued brisket, deli-style sandwiches made with fresh whole wheat breads baked in a wood-fired brick oven and real homemade ice cream.
- The Potter’s House allows visitors to marvel as a clump of clay is crafted into spectacularly glazed vases, bowls, dinnerware sets and a variety of other functional and decorative pottery.
- In the Heritage Furniture shop, student tour groups will witness solid wood construction, hand-cut joints, steam-bent wood, hand-carved details and much more. The wood craftsmen carefully utilize centuries-old craft skills to produce award-winning custom furniture. The furniture has been sold throughout North America, featured in fine woodworking magazines and selected for the permanent collection of the U.S. White House.
- The Heritage Forge offers a rare view as the smith transforms raw material into an amazing array of ornamental work from wrought-iron tables and beds to chandeliers and ornate gates and fences.
- At the Gristmill, watch the millers operate the water-wheel-driven mill to produce fine flour for baking. The gristmill is housed in the 1750's timber-framed "John Mott Mill."
- In the Fiber Crafts shop, see workers carding wool, combing cotton or beating flax as they begin the processes used through the generations to transform nature's raw materials into fabrics.
Student tour groups can also include a scenic hayride along the river valley.
