Lake Waco WetlandsLake Waco Wetlands

The Lake Waco Wetlands is a virtual classroom. An environmental project created in 2001 to offset the loss of habitat from raising the lake level, the 180-acre site is home to numerous aquatic plants, insects, reptiles, mammals and amphibians as well as many migratory birds. Statistics show that wetlands are home to 43 percent of the federally listed endangered and threatened species. They play an integral part in ecology by providing habitat for many species, protection from floods and improvements in water quality.

Some of the most popular features of Lake Waco Wetlands educational tours are the nursery area and bird watching. The six-acre nursery area features two types of water lily, bulrush, pickerelweed, duck potato and various other aquatic plants. To date, the local Audobon Society has documented over 130 different species of birds.

A unique facet of the wetlands is the educational experience it offers student tours, group tours, and citizens. At the Research and Education center, visitors have the opportunity to learn the importance of wetlands, learn about reservoir systems and related water issues, wildlife habitats and existing and future water-related educational programs at Baylor University.

Each year, more than 2,400 area students donate thousands of hours to help with seasonal plantings and water quality education.

The Lake Waco Wetlands is one of only four wetlands within 150 miles of Central Texas. It stands out as the only one to provide the combination of public access and hands-on laboratory experience.
