Shear Madness
What is an exciting trip to an amazing city without a live performance? We love to
include one in all our group travel tours if possible. There’s nothing like sitting back
after a long day of touring various attractions and instead enjoying the hard work and fun
entertainment by others.
Of course, if you choose Shear Madness, I guarantee you won’t just be sitting back. And
it’s not just the performers that have to work during this show*.
Shear Madness was adapted from a 1960s play that used audience participation to
determine the outcome for the characters. Today the show is a favorite with audiences in several destinations, including Washington D.C. and Boston. Set in a unisex salon, Shear Madness introduces the audience to energetic, bright, and colorful characters, thrown together first by coincidence and then as the witnesses, investigators, and potential suspects in the murder of a concert pianist.
You’ll be laughing before a single line is spoken in this high-energy, comedy-driven
whodunit. But the lines will have you too. The characters use recent events and popular
gossip in their humor, an important part of Shear Madness and one detail that keeps the show fresh through many viewings. You may also find your group called out from the stage if you’ve reserved your seats in advance.
The interactive part of the show really begins, though, after the investigators begin their
pursuit of the truth. The entire audience is called upon then to remember important
details from the moments leading up to the murder. You’re expected to ask questions
of your own, demanding answers from the excitable cast – all determined to prove their
innocence. At intermission you can even talk to the investigator personally and offer
more clues you think you’ve seen.
The thrill of Shear Madness is that you can see it again and again and not know how it
will end. The show uses the audience’s insight to determine its course. Plus, it includes new jokes and references as our current events change around us. There’s no show like Shear Madness, and none of its performances are the same.
*Note: Though hardly for mature audiences only, Shear Madness does use some mature humor in its performance. Probably most appropriate for ages 13 and above, though every group should use its own discretion.
