Museum of the African Diaspora
Definition of Diaspora - The dispersion of any peoples from their original homeland.
The Museum of the African Diaspora, or MoAD, is San Francisco's very own 'thriving fine arts institution dedicated to building a community that inspires, educates, and connects people of all ages and backgrounds'. This museum focuses on the African Diaspora and its effects throughout time, both locally and internationally. The Museum of the African Diaspora is located within the popular Yerba Buena Arts Districts and is one of the very few U.S museums focused solely on the African Diaspora.
There are various programs and exhibits within that showcase the art, history, and cultural richness of the African Diaspora, several excellent ways to explore and celebrate the beliefs, practices, traditions, and customs connected to these major movements scattered throughout the facility.
School groups will love the educational opportunities within, with several programs that allow you to explore specific classroom curriculum in regards to the subject matters at hand. Immerse your students in art and allow them to engage in the cultural exploration of the African Diaspora with professional guides and educators on site. Currently, your group can explore such exhibits as Otra Mas, an exploration of Carnaval over the last 40 years, as well as Ebitenyefa Baralye native art. There are regular events, film screenings, and lectures on-site, as well. There are always the Slavery Narratives to explore as well, allowing you to discover the very personal experiences of such people as Tempe Herndon Durham, Mary Prince, and Guladah Equiano.
