Inside the Great Lakes Crossing Outlet, you will find a sort of hidden Detroit gem, a marine science educational center known as SEA LIFE Michigan Aquarium. This interactive aquarium holds thousands of aquatic creatures, various interactive touch pools, and even an impressive 180-degree ocean tunnel. Open from 10 am to 8 pm each day, this family-friendly museum stop provides exhibits that allow guests to interact with a variety of sea creatures they normally wouldn't, many of the areas inside offering play areas, feeding times, and group discounts.
The variety of sea creatures inside are kept with the best conservation practices in mind, this aquarium known well for its successful Breed Rescue Program. This dedication to conservation follows the motto ‘Breed. Rescue. Protect’, the center working to actively practice their motto by breeding Potbelly Seahorses and Banggai Cardinalfish, rescuing Benson the Green Sea Turtle, and protecting local watersheds with regularly scheduled clean-ups. You can learn all about this further in a 20-minute Behind the Scenes Tour, a trip around the aquarium with expert guides giving you the inside scoop on how they care for and feed the over 5,00 marine and freshwater animals here. You will also learn about life support, filtration, water equity systems, food prep, and research. You could also just try to catch a daily ‘talk’ or feeding.
Before you go be sure to meet Benson, the rescued Green Turtle from Anastasia State Park in Florida. Benson was nursed back to health in Georgia and now calls Detroit his home. Also, if you get hungry just remember all the great dining options outside the aquarium to visit afterward. If you would like to also visit Legoland you can look into discounted combo tickets, as well as discounted tickets for field trips, groups, scouts, and church groups!
