Texas Military Forces Museum
An excellent history and education stop for any group to make while in Austin, the Texas Military Forces Museum tells the story of the Texas Army and Air National Guard, as well as the Texas State Guard in both wartimes and peacetimes.
Known more formally as the Brigadier General John C.L. Scribner Texas Military Forces Museum, this history museum is hosted by the Texas Military Department at Camp Mabry, a part of the U.S. Army Historical Program. The museum is open to the public each Tuesday through Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm and offers free admission, though adults who visit will need to present a valid ID to get in.
Inside the museum, you will find a large collection of military vehicles and exhibits covering various Texas conflicts from 1823, the date of the first militia muster in Stephen F. Austin's colony, to today. You will be able to explore over 45,000 square feet of uniforms, weapons, tanks, artillery, aircraft, helicopters, and more. More specifically, you will see examples of self-propelled guns, trucks, jeeps, jet fighters, towed artillery pieces, and realistic full-scale battle time environments.
The museum puts on regular living history programs, battle reenactments, and events, and also offers kid-friendly activities such as museum scavenger hunts.
