The Alabama State Capitol is one of the most pivotal places to visit during your entire trip around the state of Alabama, this spot iconic for both being the first Confederate Capitol, and for serving as the still-current state capitol. Here on Capitol Hill, otherwise known as Goat Hill, you will find the 9 sprawling acres full of Greek Revival architecture and more history than you can imagine. This spot is considered to be an official National Historic Landmark in Montgomery, this ‘museum of state history and politics’ first built here on Dexter Avenue in 1851. The Confederacy started here in the original Senate Chamber, though obviously, that did not last very long. Another great historical gem you will learn about here is how the Selma/Montgomery marches ended here, right on the street in front of the building.

Your group can participate in guided tours every Saturday from 9-3, a free and highly educational option that gives you much more insight into this shining spot on the Civil Heritage Trail. The iconic internal spiral stairway (Horace King) leads the way to the Governor’s and other ex-branch officers who still occupy onsite offices, the 19th-century architecture demanding your attention along the way. Learn about how the first president of the Confederate States of America, Jeff Davis, gave his inaugural address on the portico in 1861, the spot now marked with a bronze star, or maybe about the nearby Dexter Ave Memorial Church in which MLK Jr ministered for over 5 years!
