Birch Aquarium

Birch Aquarium

The public face of the Scripps Institute for Oceanography from UC San Diego, the Birch Aquarium is first and foremost a research and conservation establishment working to protect the marine species of the world. Providing education and appreciation for the global community of underwater animals, the Birch Aquarium is a leading institution with gorgeous creatures, amazing exhibits, and effective academic displays with helpful staff ready to answer questions.

Featuring more than 60 habitats, the Birch Aquarium is home to thousands of fish and invertebrates that call the Pacific Ocean their own. Purely educational and enlightening exhibits include Mexican Seas, a photographic journey through the waters of Baja and beyond, as well as interactive film experiences like Whales: Voices in the Sea. The Birch Aquarium has its own Kelp Forest, viewable online through underwater cameras, housing leopard sharks, garibaldi, eels, and more. Learn up-close about the lives of seahorses, explore a tide pool with all of your senses, touch a starfish, and visit a 13,000-gallon tank of La Jolla leopard sharks, rays, and other creatures that live off the shores of San Diego.

As a purely educational institution, the Birch Aquarium prides itself on its academic learning programs. Field trips, adult groups, and even young children are treated to interactive learning programs with hands-on activities, up-close encounters with living animals, and behind the scenes tours led by intensely knowledgeable staff ready and willing to answer any questions you may have.
