Fort Garry

Welcome to Fort Garry, or Upper Fort Garry, the historic 1822 Hudson's Bay Company Trading Post. Located at the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers in what is now downtown Winnipeg, this historic site is 'arguably one of the most significant historic sites in Western Canada'.

During your group's visit to Fort Garry, you will learn all about the 5th European trading post, the park offering an interpretive historic experience. Explore the original fort gate, the vast green space and gardens, the multitude of historic structures (listed below), and even a light show during your visit to the fort.

The light show takes place at the Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries Heritage Wall, the over 400-foot wall built to duplicate the height, depth, and location of the fort's original West Wall, which was demolished in the 1880s. The wall is made of steel and light, the layers on it scribing 3 continuous lines that trace the history of Western Canada and Fort Garry. From left to right you can see the journey from the first nations, Metis nation, fur trade, settlers, prairies, buildings, and the city you see today.
