Diving, especially in the Florida Keys, is an adventure in the underwater abyss, to learn and discover the unexplored and untamed. As humans cannot live underwater, the allure is all the greater to explore its depths and control what is beyond our reach. The History of Diving Museum in Islamorada attempts to explain just that, our indomitable attraction to the practice of diving, throughout history and into modern times.
The History of Diving Museum showcases exhibits on the Timeline of Diving, starting over 4,000 years in the past and over the evolution of diving techniques and technologies. Then we come to the South Florida Adventure and the area's preoccupation with diving sports and beyond to the history of Matt Johnston, the first ventilator-dependent quadriplegic to ever SCUBA dive. Explore the history and practice of treasure hunting, shipwrecks, and even the fictional divers like Captain Nemo's Nautilus submarine from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne.
There are endless opportunities awaiting in the deep blue sea, only to be discovered by diving. The History of Diving Museum is an excellent and fascinating educational opportunity to "dive" into human history, psyche, and the colorful world beneath the waves.
