Macy’s Herald Square

Macys

Macy’s, the Great American Department Store known around the nation as one of the most iconic retail brands, is one of our favorite choices for fashion must-stops in New York City. While the entire Macy’s conglomerate has over 740 stores coast to coast, none can truly compare to the one here in NYC, Macy’s Herald Square. This two million square foot, 11 level, entire city block shopping center is considered to be America’s largest department store, sitting pretty at 151 West 34th Street. This building is registered as a National Historic Landmark and was established here in 1902, though the brand was established as early as 1858.

Each Macy’s will offer you a wide variety of shoes, clothing, house-ware, gifts, and furniture, each item part of a first class selection of top fashion brands. For instance, while shopping for clothing you will see such iconic brands as Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, and more.

The Herald Square building in particular is a great shopping experience because of the history of the building alone. This was the first building to have an escalator, a wooden one created in 1902, starting a long span of trendsetting in department store service. In 1947 the iconic film Miracle on 34th Street was filmed in the now famous Macy’s Santa Land, something you will learn during a tour, as well as all about Isidor and Ida Straus, the co-owners of Macy’s that tragically died aboard the Titanic. See the memorial plaque on the main floor’s entrance, and then visit the Mezzanine Level to see the full-service visitor center and possibly take part in on site store tours. There are also several eateries within this shopping center, as well as various daily community events!
