Maritime Museum of Sandusky

Maritime Museum of Sandusky

...you'll have a boatload of fun discovering the rich maritime history of the Sandusky Bay area.

The Maritime Museum of Sandusky is the historic boat-themed museum located right across the street from Battery Park Marina. This museum features various interactive educational exhibits and programs on pirates, shipwrecks, fishing, boat building, Ohio wetlands, the Underground Railroad, and more! When you step inside the Maritime Museum of Sandusky you are 'traveling back in time to the old days of passenger boats, commercial fishing, and ice harvesting on Lake Erie'!

Take a self-guided tour of the museum with your group and see each exhibit before you head to the boat building workshop (younger children may opt-in for a scavenger hunt or small model boat workshop instead). Within the 2 outbuildings of the museum, you will find the workshops, as well as the wooden Lyman boat, restoration shops, and other various display vessels. Back inside the museum, you will find the gift shop full of nautical items, toys, and books.

There are regularly scheduled events here at Maritime, such as the Historic Program Series each Saturday during the winter. There are various themes each week such as Rum Running or the Battle of Lake Erie.

If you are interested in more in-depth educational information before or during your visit be sure to let us know and we will get you access to the online lesson plans for grades 3-5 (following the Sandusky Area Maritime Curriculum Guide) or resources featuring in-depth information on Ohio Lighthouses, the Underground Railroad, Commercial Shipping, Johson Island during the Civil War, and Ohio's Wetlands.
