Reading Terminal Market
Reading Terminal Market is America's oldest farmers market, an indoor foodie paradise that provides locally grown and exotic produce, meats and poultry, seafood, cheeses, baked goods, and so much more. First established in 1893, it is known as one of America's oldest and largest public markets overall.
It's going to be hard to tell you where to go first, so maybe you better just follow your nose. You are going to find everything from soul food and local Philly delicacies to authentic Asian dishes and classic Pennsylvania Dutch meals. Overall, there are over 80 different merchants and sit down eating options. Here are some suggestions for where to go for certain types of foods:
- Breakfast - Miller's Twist
- Italian - Termini Bros
- Cheese - Valley Shepard Creamery and Meltkraft
- Deli Sandwiches - Hershel's East Side Deli
- Organic - Fair Food Farmstand
- Seafood - Pearl's Oyster Bar
- Vegan - Luhv
- Philly Cheesesteak - DiNics (Di Nics was actually recognized by the Travel Channel for having 'America's best sandwich'.)
There is a lot more than just food here, though, with a wide selection of home goods available as well. You can pick up a quilt, cookbooks, fresh-cut flowers, and home decor while browsing around as well.
One of our favorite options here is the Taste of Philly Food Tour, a 75-minute tasty tour filled with the history of some of Philly's favorite foods, plus of course, Reading Terminal Market itself (did you know this market got its name from the Reading Railroad?). Throughout the tour, you will get to taste and learn all about Philly Cheesesteaks, Sticky Buns, Soft Pretzels, Hershey Kisses, and Philadelphia Creamcheese!
We hope you brought your appetite!
