Steamship William Mather

Stop by and check out the Steamship William Mather Museum, built in 1925, on your next visit to Cleveland. The William Mather was the flagship of the Cleveland-Cliffs Steamship Company fleet until 1952. At this unique and fascinating museum, visitors will have the opportunity to take a tour of the steamship and learn about her unique history.

The William Mather is open for tours May through October. In the course of the experience, guests will have the opportunity to see what life was like onboard a working Great Lakes freighter and you can even explore the ship from stem to stern. The group will see several areas of the William Mather including its huge cargo holds, the brass and oak pilot house, its elegant guest quarters, and the four-story engine room. Visitors can also walk the decks and marvel at engineering firsts that helped to transform Northeast Ohio into a spectacular industrial center.

While you are at the museum, you can view fascinating exhibits, known as the Great Lakes Story Exhibits. At the exhibit areas, you will take part in interactive experiences telling you the story about how the Great Lakes were formed, the environmental threats they faced, and how we are using science and technology to in order to help restore the health of these great bodies of water.
