Waverly Hills Sanitorium

Waverly Hills Sanitorium

Welcome to the iconic Waverly Hills Sanitarium, the historic home of Louisville's own tuberculosis hospital.

There is an interesting and long-standing history surrounding this now-spooky building, best explained by the Waverly Hills Historical Society themselves:

A strong effort to cure people of TB began in the mid-1800s. Sanatoriums had some success and started springing up across the country in the late 1800s and early 1900s. In 1909 Major Hays sold his farm to the Louisville tuberculosis board. That when the first hospital was built (1910). The second hospital was built in 1912 and together they accommodated 210 patients. The 3rd hospital was built because the city hospital closed for a rebuild and it was decided they would no longer accept TB patients. So the city solicited funds to build a larger Waverly Hills. The construction began in 1924 and it was completed in 1926. The new building had a post office, barber and hairdresser, library, gift shop, radio station, continuing education center and multidenominational church. -Waverly Hills Historical Society

It was considered to be 'one of the most modern and well-equipped facility at the time'. The hospital was closed down in 1961.

History and paranormal enthusiasts Charles and Tina Mattingly now run the building, what is now considered 'one of the most haunted places in America'.
