Wyland’s Whaling Wall

Wyland’s Whaling Wall

South Padre Island

You certainly don't want to miss an opportunity to see the larger-than-life Whaling Wall in South Padre Island during your visit, this massive mural #53 in a series of 100 done by artist Wyland, a man popular for his huge environmental murals of marine life.

The wall is featured on the South Padre Island Convention Centre and is located at the north end of the island, about 4 miles north of the Causeway, very close to the Laguna Madre Nature Trail. This wall is officially titled "Orcas off the Gulf of Mexico" and depicts life-sized killer whales in their natural environment. The mural takes up 3 sides of the convention center and serves the purpose of raising the public awareness of the dangers that these marine mammals face. It is an excellent roadside attraction, photo opportunity, and chance to learn about Wyland and the impact/purpose of his work.

Wyland himself is a Detroit artist born in the 1950s known internationally for his mural work.
